Hundreds of people
visit The Sanctuary each year: children as part of their school curriculum, high school
and college students studying animal behavior, naturalists, woodcarvers and artists, and
everyday folks who want to see and learn about waterfowl.
The Sanctuary is open March through June by
appointment only. The most colorful time to visit is between March and May when the birds are in full breeding plumage, but their beauty is striking no matter what
the time of year. Please call or e-mail Kem and Julia Appell for more
information and rates for tours:

What You Can Expect
Your host, Kem (when
available), will take you on a guided tour of the grounds including the nesting area,
introduce the many species of waterfowl at The Sanctuary, and discuss life in the aviary.
Youll see a rich array of form, color, and function: 70 different species of swans,
geese and ducks; about 150 different feather patterns; males, females and juveniles; the
varied behavior and social patterns of the waterfowl as well as their mating and parenting
instincts.
You can stay for an hour or an afternoon. Picture-taking is welcome and encouraged.

How to Prepare
Before you come, its a good idea to learn a little about waterfowl how to
differentiate the classes and species, how they fly, what they eat and where they live.
