The Connecticut Waterfowl Trust (CWT), also known as The
Sanctuary, had its beginnings in 1990 when Kem Appell gave his wife, Julia, a
birthday gift of two black swans for their backyard pond. Kems
casual interest quickly became a passionate one. Today, their four-acre
residential property is the largest waterfowl sanctuary in New England and one
of the largest aviaries in North America.
Located in Farmington, Connecticut, The Sanctuary is home to roughly 70 species of waterfowl, several of which are on the endangered list. Representatives are from around the world, including such remote regions as Siberia, West Africa, Bangladesh, Alaska, Korea, Nepal, Chile and Peru. There are about 500 permanent residents, each with a mate, and several hundred more that were raised at The Sanctuary return daily for food and to socialize.
Beautifully landscaped, The Sanctuary provides a natural habitat for the birds. Every care is given to ensure a healthy and safe environment as well as an aesthetically-pleasing one.
At The Sanctuary, you will have the unique opportunity to see waterfowl from
around the world cohabitating in a natural setting, and to learn about the
conservation, life cycle, survival and importance of this form of wildlife. Come
